garage door panel replacement

Garage Door Panel Replacement in Portland

Backed into your garage door? You’re not alone — it’s the most common call we get for panel damage.

A dented or cracked panel doesn’t always mean you need a whole new door. If the manufacturer still makes the panel and only one or two sections are damaged, we can replace just the affected panels and save you the cost of a full replacement.

But here’s the honest answer: it depends. If more than two panels are damaged, replacing the entire door is usually the smarter move because the cost is almost the same — and with a new door you also get new hardware, springs, and a warranty on everything.

When We Can Replace a Panel — and When We Can’t

We can replace the panel if:

  • The manufacturer still produces the same model
  • The panel groove pattern hasn’t changed (this is how panels stack and interlock — if the manufacturer updated the design, old and new panels won’t fit together)
  • Only one or two panels are damaged

We recommend a new door instead if:

  • More than two panels are damaged — at that point, the cost of multiple panels plus labor approaches the price of a brand new door, and the new door comes with new hardware, springs, and a full warranty
  • The door model is discontinued, and panels aren’t available
  • The manufacturer changed the panel profile, and new panels won’t match
  • The door is old enough that other components (springs, rollers, hardware) are nearthe  end of life anyway

We work with Amarr, CHI, NWD, and other major manufacturers. Our team can identify your door model and check panel availability before you commit to anything.

What Panel Replacement Costs

Panel pricing depends on door size, insulation level, design, and whether it has glass inserts.

Door TypeStarting Price
Single-car garage door panelFrom $750
Double-car garage door panelFrom $950
Full-view glass panelFrom $2,000

These prices include the panel and installation. Pricing varies based on insulation type (non-insulated, 2-layer, 3-layer), panel design (raised, flush, carriage house), and glass options.

Keep in mind: Most panels need to be ordered from the manufacturer. Stock panels from local warehouses can arrive faster, but custom or less common models may take a few weeks. We’ll give you a timeline once we place the order.

How Panel Replacement Works

  1. We inspect the damage and identify your door model. Our tech checks the manufacturer, panel style, insulation type, and groove pattern to confirm replacement panels are available.
  2. We’ll order the matching panel. Most panels are ordered from the manufacturer. If it’s a common model, local warehouses may have it in stock. Typical lead time is a few weeks.
  3. We come back and install. Installation takes 1-3 hours, depending on which panel is damaged. Top panels are the easiest — the door comes apart from the top down. The bottom and intermediate panels require more labor because we have to disassemble more of the door to reach them.
  4. We test the door. After installation,n we run the door through its full cycle, check the balance, and make sure everything tracks properly.

The Real Reason Panels Get Damaged

It’s almost always a car. Someone pulls in too close, backs out at an angle, or a teenager misjudges the clearance. We get these calls constantly — car-hit panels are one of our most common repair requests.

Less common causes: storm damage (tree branches, strong winds), sports equipment (basketball hitting the door repeatedly), and age-related cracking in older doors exposed to years of Portland rain and UV.

If your panel is dented but the door still operates, it’s not an emergency — but don’t wait too long. A bent panel puts stress on the hinges and rollers above and below it, which can cause secondary damage over time.

FAQs About Panel Garage Door Replacement

Starting from $750 for a single-car door panel. Double-car panels start around $950. Full-view glass panels start around $2,000. Pricing depends on door size, insulation, design, and glass options.

Panel Replacement vs. New Door — The Real Math

Here’s how to think about it:

1 panel damaged, match available: Replace the panel. Straightforward, cost-effective, and your door looks like new.

2 panels damaged; match available. Still worth replacing, but we’ll price both options for you—panels vs. a new door—so you can compare.

3+ panels damaged: At this point, the cost of buying and installing 3 or more panels is close to the price of a new garage door ($1,500–$4,500). The new door comes with new panels, hardware, springs, seals, and a warranty. We recommend considering a full replacement at this stage — but it’s your call. If you’d rather replace the panels, we’ll do it. We just want you to know both options so you can make the best decision for your budget.

Panel match not available: New door is your only option. We’ll help you find one that fits your opening and matches your home.
